The Definitive Guide to Promoting Your Local Business on Kahuti

Kahuti can produce significant exposure and revenue for local businesses with relatively little effort or cost. This is because of our hyper-local focus, intent marketing model and the decision to ensure that advertising on Kahuti would be accessible, affordable and effective for all local businesses.

The entire premise of Kahuti's marketplace is to connect local customers with relevant local businesses when customers are ready to buy—and to leave them alone and not bombard them with ads when they haven't demonstrated their intention to shop.

You don't see ads on Kahuti unless you choose to go into a specific area like Local Businesses > Handyman or Local Deals > Food & Drink. Then, we only show 'ads' within that category that are within your selected area.

Our approach contrasts with the sponsored ad model used by Facebook, Twitter and other social networks because it enables customers to engage with relevant ads on their terms, when they're ready to shop or buy instead of pelting them with an assortment of ads hoping that one might stick (or that someone might click one accidentally.)

This all means that members who interact with your ads on Kahuti tend to have higher engagement and higher intent to purchase than members who see a sponsored ad on Facebook, Twitter or anywhere else.

The previous paragraphs are important because they explain the key differences in how Kahuti approaches advertising and establishes conceptual guidelines for businesses to engage more effectively with the Kahuti community.

Introduction

Our goal is to provide a platform for local businesses that is easy to use, affordable and delivers real results. These guidelines will help ensure that you get the most out of Kahuti and help cultivate a mutually beneficial relationship between your team and ours.

  • Always check your reach. Set your location to your business address and adjust your viewing distance to see how many members you can reach in a particular area to ensure there is sufficient reach to justify advertising.
  • Be honest and realistic. Word of mouth spreads quickly around Kahuti and the last thing you want to do is create negative buzz for your business. Be sure that everything you communicate or promise is fair and realistic.
  • Try new things. Try different messages, offers and visuals to see what combination yields the best response from customers in your locale.
  • Stay connected. Kahuti is constantly growing and evolving and if you're not staying in the loop you might miss some great opportunities.
  • Share feedback. Local businesses are an essential part of the Kahuti community and we genuinely want to hear how we can do to make Kahuti better for you.

Kahuti for Local Businesses

Let's explore the ways you can promote your business on Kahuti. Of these, it's very important to recognize that promoting your business via the local news feed requires finesse in how you approach it if you want a positive reception.

  1. Local Business Directory
  2. Featured Businesses
  3. Service Requests
  4. Local Deals
  5. Featured Deals
  6. Local Events
  7. Local News Feed

Local Business Directory

The first thing you should do to promote your local business on Kahuti is to review your Services Offered and add your business to our Local Business directory. This will help local find your business and qualify you to start receiving Service Requests.

Everything that members see when they browse the Local Business Directory is within 25 miles of their location with the closest businesses, organizations and agencies being displayed at the top of the stack.

This approach ensures relevant results for customers and distributes visibility for local businesses more evenly than searches engines do because their top positions are typically controlled by the same handful of businesses.

Recommendations

  • Respond quickly. Service requests are distributed to all local businesses who provide the type of work requested so it's important to respond before a potential customer has made a decision.
  • Be realistic. Because service requests include details of the work to be done you should never respond to a service request that your business can't handle adequately, can't fit into your schedule or can't do within the requested budget.
  • List your services. The services you list in Services Offered determine which service requests you will receive and should correspond to specific services that potential customers may be looking for.
  • Ask for a recommendation. If the customer is satisfied with your work, ask them to add a recommendation on your Kahuti business page. If they aren't satisfied with the work, make a reasonable effort to make things right.

Featured Businesses

When members browse local businesses they will see businesses within 25 miles of their location. Featured Businesses are always displayed in the first row within a particular category to get maximum visibility. To ensure that all businesses have a fair chance of getting seen we will never show more than one row of featured ads.

Service Requests

When submitting a service request, members provide details about work they need to have done and Kahuti automatically invites local businesses who offer the requested services to respond to the potential customer's inquiry.

You can receive notifications of pending service requests via email just by having your business in Kahuti's Local Business directory with relevant services listed in the Services Offered part of your business page.

Free business accounts are limited to responding to 3 service requests per month. This limit is removed when you upgrade to a premium business account.

Local Deals

Deals are ideal for getting immediate visibility and engagement with customers and are suitable for most types of business.

By creating an attractive deal or bargain you can get quick visibility and establish a compelling reason for potential customers to choose your business instead of a competitor. Unlike many deal sites, Kahuti does not claim a percent of sales.

When you publish a deal on Kahuti...

It is visible in Local Deals to members within 25 miles of your business.

It is included in Added Today on each member's home page.

It is randomly distributed in the daily email digest to members within 25 miles of your business, reaching up to 100% of these members.

Deals are billed at a flat daily rate and can run for up to two weeks. Kahuti does not charge a percentage of deal revenue.

Recommendations

  • Make a compelling offer. An effective deal should be appealing enough to encourage immediate customer engagement and deliver an immediate lift in revenue and exposure. 25% off is appealing but 2.5% usually isn't.
  • Be clear and descriptive. It's important that potential customers know exactly what they are getting when they read the deal's title.
  • Start small and don't be afraid to experiment. Instead of committing to a longer run, start by running short term deals of 2-3 days so you can quickly try different titles, offers, images and ad copy to see what gets the best result.
  • Check your reach. Set your location to your business address and adjust your viewing distance to see how many members you can reach in a particular area to ensure there is sufficient reach to justify advertising.

Featured Deals

When members browse local deals they will see deals from businesses within 25 miles of their location. Featured Deals are always displayed in the first row within a particular category to get maximum visibility. To ensure that all deals have a fair chance of getting seen we will never show more than one row of featured ads.

Local Events

Local Events can be added freely and are displayed in Added Today on each member's home page and within the Local Events section. A random sampling of 5 new events is also distributed to members in their daily email digest.

When browing Local Events, members will see events within 25 miles of their location ordered by event date. Both free and paid events are supported.

Recommendations

  • Be descriptive. Be sure that your event title is descriptive enough that members know what it is just by reading the title or they won't click on it to learn more!
  • Add images. Including an appealing image will help draw attention to your event and can provide additional context to members to help them understand what your event is about.
  • Location matters. Be sure to provide the name of the venue and a complete address so that people can easily find your event. The location controls where the event is visible.
  • Be honest. If an event is not free, be sure to include the price in the event listing to ensure that interested members know exactly what to expect.

Local News Feed

Always ask: "Is this helpful, valuable or interesting to my greater community?"

The local news feed is about finding and sharing local information. It gives people within communities a place to share helpful local info, issues, recommendations and news.

Adding a post about your services isn't inherently helpful to your community because lots of other local businesses offer similar services and if they all posted about their businesses in the news feed, all of the helpful information would be buried.

There is an opportunity throw your hat into the ring when someone asks for a recommendation for the services you provide. While you should never recommend your own business, you can mention that your business provides this type of service.

Even better, Kahuti members who have had a positive experience working with you are more likely to recommend your business when someone asks for a recommendation. In a sense, your success in the local news feed is largely driven by your reputation within the community. Simply participating in the community means that members will recognize your name and feel an affinity for you when you mention that you offer the services they're looking for.

Recommendations

  • Don't spam. Excessive news feed promotions will harm your reputation with the community and the Kahuti team may delete blatant advertising to ensure that the quality of the local news feed stays high.
  • Add value. What can you do to add value within the community? Freely sharing advice based on your professional experience can be useful as can sharing information about local issues that might impact the community. Did you pass a major road closure on the way to work? Share it with your community to build trust and recognition.
  • Get connected. Members who recognize you as a participant in the community are more likely to trust you and choose your business when they need the services you provide than someone they've never interacted with.
  • Be real. Unless you are a government entity, use a real name for your Kahuti account, not your business name. This helps members to identify with you on a personal level because the news feed is all about person-to-person interactions.
  • Be respectful. Remember that everybody in your community can see your interactions on the news feed and negative antics can quickly tarnish your reputation. Your actions will influence how your business is perceived.
