Find a Trusted Babysitter, Housesitter or Petsitter With Kahuti.

December 22, 2016

Choosing a stranger to watch over your home or your loved ones is terrifying.

Because let's face it, we've all heard the horror stories.

For a long time I refused to entrust my daughter to anyone. She just seemed so small and fragile. I would have felt a lot better choosing someone after seeing a whole bunch of recommendations for them from my neighbors and reading their stories about their experiences.

The problem with reviews is that it's easy to make (or buy) fake ones and when choosing someone to care for your kids, pets or home you need to know you're making the right decision.

#1: Get recommendations from real people who live nearby.

You need a way to get recommendations from people you trust and people who live nearby, with verifiable details like street or community name so you know they're real. Plus you need a way to reach out to ask questions about a recommendation so you can make an informed decision.

When somebody is recommended by your next-door neighbor, two others in your residential community and several more in surrounding neighborhoods, it adds a lot more credibility than dozens of reviews from random people who might not be real.

Because everything on Kahuti is based on location, when you ask for a recommendation it is shown only to people who live nearby. So when you ask about a babysitter you'll get recommendations from people in your neighborhood (or the one down the street.)

You may also get responses from people who provide babysitting services and are available for your requested dates which leads to step #2.

#2: Check them out to make sure everything adds up.

Asking lots of questions is important. Kahuti makes it easy for you to reach out to people who have made a recommendation to ask for more information as well as talk to people who are offering their services. (Ask them for references, too.)

You should definitely run a free check of the public sex offender registry as well as carefully evaluate whether the reviews or recommendations seem legitimate. Anonymous reviews should be ignored as should reviews without a real name or picture.

On Kahuti, members can post public recommendations for individuals which are displayed on their profiles. These recommendations include details about their experience and why they recommend a person for a particular service.

Their Facebook profile can provide helpful insights, too. Do they seem responsible and trustworthy? Are there any pictures or comments that might be concerning?

#3: Start small and consider additional precautions.

Start small. Don't leave your kids, pets or home under someone else's care for an extended period of time until you've build a relationship with them.

People tend to be on their best behavior when they know somebody might be watching. Consider installing surveillance cameras (real ones or fake ones) and mention that your home security setup provides video feeds.

Leave emergency contact information for yourself and consider including relevant information like your family doctor or preferred vet. Keep a copy with you so you don't have to search for phone numbers, just in case an emergency comes up.

#4: Had a great experience? Share it!

Our members rely on recommendations shared by other members to make educated decisions. If you've had a babysitting, petsitting or housesitting experience that was exceptional, please go to their profile on Kahuti and post a public recommendation!
